17-4 PH Stainless Steel CNC Turning Service

17-4PH (UNS S17400) is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel characterized by good mechanical strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance.

17-4PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel. Its performance is defined by the ease with which its strength level can be adjusted through variations in heat treatment processes; martensitic transformation and aging treatment—which forms a precipitation-hardening phase—serve as the primary strengthening mechanisms. 17-4PH exhibits good damping properties and strong resistance to corrosion fatigue and water droplet erosion.

17-4PH stainless steel (also known as UNS S17400) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening alloy with low carbon content but high levels of chromium and nickel. Following solution heat treatment, the alloy undergoes martensitic transformation to form a solid solution, thereby achieving strengthening. Additionally, the alloy contains specific proportions of copper and niobium. During aging treatment, these elements precipitate as fine, dispersed strengthening phases within the martensitic matrix, effectively enhancing the alloy’s strength.

Properties of 17-4PH

01 Processing Characteristics

1. Hot Working: Forging and hot upsetting are key steps. The overall hot working process includes solution annealing, cooling, and aging treatment.

2. Cold Working: This can only be performed in the softened state, and conditions are relatively strict. Following cold working, prompt solution treatment enhances resistance to stress corrosion and improves capabilities for rolling and bending; work should be performed in the softened state to avoid cracking.

3. Ease of Processing: Regarding fabrication, 17-4PH stainless steel offers good weldability; however, post-weld heat treatment is required to relieve stress and restore mechanical properties.
