Chromating (also known as chemical coating) is a surface passivation process for aluminum. It involves immersing aluminum parts in a specific chemical solution to form a corrosion-resistant chemical coating on their surfaces.

Compared to anodizing, chromate conversion coating is less expensive, but its hardness and wear resistance are inferior to those of an anodized layer. This treatment is suitable for certain applications with high electrical conductivity requirements and offers a cost-effective protective solution.
